Styles and captions

I'm trying to develop a template for my office to use for reports. I was
advised to make my own styles with unique names so that there wouldn't be
confusion between users' version of say, "Heading 1" and a customized
"Heading 1" in my template.

I'm having two problems with this:
1) Can I set it so that figure and table captions are in my "FigureCaption"
and "TableCaption" styles, instead of the default "Caption" style?

2) When "Include Chapter Number" is checked in the caption dialog box, I get
an error message that says there is no such formatting as Heading 1. Well,
of course there isn't because I used my custom "Head1" instead. "Head1" is
set to be outline level Heading 1, though. In the caption dialog box, there
seems to be no options to select custom styles to define chapters.

Are there workarounds for this, or am I not approaching this issue correctly?

Thank you!

I'm not sure why anyone told you to use your own style names in the first
place. :(
While I like to do that for certain purposes, it has its drawbacks for
specific purposes.

Thank you! The articles you mention were extremely helpful. I will try to
make the template by just modifying the default headings.
