Stupid Network questions?

I just bought a notebook w/ XP. I have an older desktop
w/ 98SE. Both have ethernet ports, I've been using a dsl
connection with the desktop via ethernet.

All I wanna do is copy files from old to new. Is it
possible to run an ethernet cable from old to new &
establish a workgroup/network? The computer w/ 98SE won't
even recognise itself with Network Monitor.

To get the two to see each other via the ethernet connections you'll need a
crossover cable between the two ports, not the regular cable.
