Networking question...

Hello everyone! I have bought my router, and have it connected (via ethernet)
to my DSL modem... I want to network my desktop computer using an Ethernet
cable, and my laptop, using my wireless card... I want to share files,
printers, and my DSL connection... Will this connection work? I am using
Windows XP on both systems, and DO NOT have a networking card inside my
desktop...

Hi

Hopefully you bought a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

In order to Network the computers need Network Card.

So you need a Wireless Card in the Laptop, and a regular NIC in the Desktop.

The whole thing should look like this:

To configure the Router with the DSL: http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html

To configure the Wireless this might help.

Wireless - Basic Configuration: http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Config.html

Wireless Security - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html

To configure Network Shadings this might help.

I did.... But now I want to network them...I now know that I can not
"network" them, but now my question is... Can I still use wireless DSL on my
laptop, even if my desktop does not have the network card?

You CAN network them, but only after you get a network adapter (either PCI or
USB, wired or wireless) for the Desktop.

In the mean time, you can use the DSL via the wireless network card in the
laptop. You do not "have to" have any other computer attached. However, once
you attach the desktop to the network, you should be able to get DSL access to
both computers at the same time.

Hi

It might be that you can use the Wireless Laptop with the Wireless Router
and the DSL without a Wired computer.

It depends whether the Laptop can connect by default to the Router
Wirelessly. If it is not connecting by default there is no way to configure
the Router unless you have a Wired computer.

Give it a try there is nothing to lose.

I see.... So if I connect my desktop to the router using a USB connection,
then it will work... (for the desktop) The laptop sounds ready to go...

Yes, but the "USB connection" has to be a USB-Ethernet device, unless your
router has a direct USB connection on it.

right. It will be a USB connection, but I will have an ethernet-to-USB adapt.
Thanks for the information! (Can I still share my printer and files with a
Ethernet or USBN connection?)
