Home Networking Performance question

Hi,

I have a small home network set up at home, as follows:

- RCA Cable Modem going to NetGear Router. Time Warner provides Earthlink
high-speed cable service.
- Desktop 1 connected to terminal 1 on Router via ethernet cable
- Desktop 2 connected to terminal 2 on Router via ethernet cable (much of
the time this computer, which is an older PC, is turned OFF).
- Laptop connected via Wireless card (Intel ProSet)

All computers are configured for file and print sharing, set up via Windows
XP Network Setup Wizard. Most work is performed on the Laptop, which views,
edits and saves its files from/onto Desktop 1.

Problem: when working on the Laptop with a file stored on Desktop 1, saving
changes to the file takes a LONG, LONG time and sometimes it locks up the
computer. Is this a typical problem? This even happens when I plug an
ethernet cable directly into the laptop (thereby bypassing the wireless). Is
there anything I can do to cut down on this lag time and speed up
performance? It seems that a simple Save command in MS Word should not take
so long. Also, both the Laptop and Desktop 1 are very well outfitted with
RAM and disk space. The laptop is less than 2 years old, and the desktop (1)
is brand new.

Anyone else experience this?

Thank you.
