I do not see it in the tray of my taskbar, but suddenly i recieve a

"Run this program when windows starts" & "Allow this program to run in

Are you using Outloook Express? If so, click on Tools/Options and uncheck
the box which says 'Automatically log on to Windows Messenger'.

I have the same prob! As soon as I start outlook express the silly messanger
4.7 starts in the backgroud without my knoledge. The option ' 'Automatically
log on to Windows Messenger' in tool/options is already unchecked!!
I even unchecked the option " run in the background ' in in the messanger
4.7 but the prob is still there!!

Any other ideas?

Greetings Mats,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also
keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi Fabrizio,

To stop this, close Outlook Express, then download and run the following ..reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After this Messenger will no longer start Messenger.

The message that "programs require messenger (IE and OE)"
and/or "some programs are using messenger and must be closed"
What are the "dire consequences" that are mentioned when I dare to try and
get rid of messenger ?
