Windows Messenger runs by itself when I start MSN Messenger?

I use MSN Messenger 6.2.0137
But whenever I start it, Windows Messenger 5.0 is also started but in the
background? In the tray there is only the MSN Messenger icon and not the
Windows Messenger icon.
When I stop MSN Messenger 6.2, it really stops but Windows Messenger 5.0 is
still running in the background.
I allready unchecked in both Messenger progs the options "Start when Windows
start" and "Run app in the background" yet this does not solve the problem.
Did upgrade from Windows Messenger 4.7 to Windows Messenger 5.0 but the
problem stays.

Greetings,

This actually shouldn't happen but here are some things that may be causing this to happen.

Firstly, if you're a Messenger Plus user, upgrade to the latest version. Some older versions
can cause this behavior: http://www.msgplus.net

Secondly, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added
a new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
