What is the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger

I don't know what is the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger... ideas?

MSN Messenger came first like 4 or 5 years ago and I have used it since, and I have updated their versions... Then Windows Messenger came when I upgraded to Windows XP a couple of years ago. Well, I thought Windows Messenger was a desing change and rename from MSN Messenger, anyway, I used it, then came an newer version...

But then, something that drove me nuts it's seing an update for MSN Messenger, huh? 2 Messengers in one windows?

I downloaded MSN Messenger 5.0 and continued, I deleted Windows Messenger.

Currently I have MSN Messenger 6.2 and I love it, but the thing is that every time I launch Outlook Express 6, Windows Messenger starts and hell it's annoying?

What is the general difference between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger???? I have the newest versions of both. Should I keep em both?

Dear "Ferro_bobo"

"There are several differences between the two. Most
notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for
display pictures, custom emoticons, has a different
interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger
supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM
Server, etc. Which one you use is up
to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon
your needs and likes), however one
thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be
installed on Windows XP in order for
MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard, Application
Sharing, etc.).

MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies
(Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile,
etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around
Windows technologies (Exchange Server,
Office Live Communications Server, Windows Netmeeting,
etc.)" (this is a direct quote from a reply sent by
Jonathan Kay)

So, basicly Windows Messenger is a Windows XP version of
MSN Messenger but has some other features like Remote
Assistance. MSN Messenger is the MSN version that is used
with MSN Features like Hotmail but the features are in
both so it doesnt matter which one you use (just note
that if you attempt to uninstall Windows Messenger, you
will loose some features like Reomote assistance when you
use MSN Messenger.) You can also use both Windows and MSN
Messenger at once and sign in with 2 different accounts.

Hope this clears things up,
Dan

Check out http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1059731503 if you want
to prevent Windows Messenger from starting.

Norton AV Instant Messaging protection can be the culprit, and somehow
restarts messenger.
