hi I'm a dummy while trying to help a friend get passed her boyfriends
administrative password in order for her to take control of her computer ,
ran a ms-dos start up disk and now it has no windows xp booting up just the a
prompt in ms-dos.HHHHHHHHHHeeeeeeeellllllpp

You've got problems. What did you do while using the startup disk? If you
ran FDISK and FORMAT you are toast. Are you trying to boot with the disk in
the A: drive? If so, stop it. Can you boot into Safe Mode? Try hitting F8
when rebooting to get into Safe Mode. The exact key can vary, but F8 is
very common. Try doing this:

At the A:/ prompt you enter C:/Win
Hit ENTER
Hope you didn't format the hard drive.

If you can get to the BIOS, by hitting the delete key or possibly the Escape
(Esc) key constantly during boot up, you can set the boot order to boot from
the CD drive. You can then stick the Windows XP CD in the drive, reboot,
and clean install XP. Try everything else first. Be ready to apologize to
your friend. Good luck. Post back with your adventures.

Just a thought, was the disk removed before rebooting?

Hi,

What precisely did you do after booting the system with the dos boot floppy?
Did you issue any commands? Have you removed it and tried restarting without
it?
