I have a BIG problem. Don't know if it is worm-related,
but I can't even start up Windows (have XP Home OEM
installed). Get to black DOS-like screen giving options
like start-up in Safe Mode, Normally, Last Good Config,
etc. If I choose any option, Windows XP start up screen
comes on, then computer manufacturer screen, then won't
start up beyond that and returns to the DOS-like screen.
A never-ending loop always back to this screen. From
conversations to date with computer mfr they say only
option left is to use restore CD which will reformat and
reinstall (aka "lose everything"). Is there a way to
install an upgrade or something to replace Windows OS
files and leave my data intact ? I do have a Windows 98
OEM install CD but I would assume going backwards wouldn't
work. I'll try anything before having to reformat and
lose all my data. Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated....

If you have the hard drive space you can try a parallel
install. When the location option comes up direct the
install to either a different folder or drive.

ex; Original path c:\windows
Parallel path c:\winxp

While this will not solve the major problem it could let
you into the system long enough to backup/copy your files
before performing a Fresh install.
