Stuck in BLUE SCREEN

I'm helping a friend post a message because they have a BLUE SCREEN and
cannot boot at all.... We are talking about windows XP Home with all service
packs and updates.

Upon initial startup, a prompt from Logitech icon in system tray regarding
"Do you want to check for download..." was selected, downloaded and
installed. Upon completion, I've been told it caused several dozen outlook
sessions to be started.

My first thought was a virus, but my friend was running Norton AntiVirus. I
know it is up to date and scanned in the past day.

When control was gained, the system was rebooted with a BLUE SCREEN coming
up stating something like "... an error with windows was found causing
windows to be shut down...system dump..." with instructions to boot into safe
mode....bla, bla, bla. An error referring to "Bad_Pool_Caller" was listed.

An attempt to boot into safe mode caused still causes the same BLUE SCREEN
to come up with the same instructions, etc. We also tried booting to command
prompt with the same results.

I'm unsure how to help my friend resolve this issue short of reparing or
reinstalling. In either case, I'm not sure how to proceed since we would
have to reinstall back to the original license and the PC is up to date with
all service packs and updates. Is a reinstall our only option?

Any help would be appreciated.

Start computer by accessing the BIOS,then install xp cd,select to boot to
xp cd,at cd menu screen press R For recovery, select 1 For C: Press enter
key for password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,you might type:Listsvc
