I installed XP over ME and can't get Word to work or any other programs to work. The computer wants me to re-load the programs and some of them were pre-loaded already. I must have configured the installation wrong or something. I would like to get red of ME and it still shows up as a choice when I boot up. HELP......

when you installed xp what option did you choose?
did you install xp on a different drive or partition then
the one that has ME?
need more info to be of any help.
any program that was installed in ME will have to be re-
installed in xp for it to work.

Greetings --

If you see an option to boot into either WinXP or WinMe, than you
_did not_ "...install XP over ME," a.k.a., perform an upgrade. You
apparently selected the "New Installation" option, instead of the
"Upgrade (Recommended)" option. You've inadvertently created a
dual-boot configuration, probably with both operating system installed
to the same hard drive partition. This is a recipe for disaster;
until you get it fixed, you should backup any important data at least
daily.

Having created a dual-boot, you'll obviously need to install any
applications that you wish to use from within the second OS, WinXP.

At this point, you best option would be to back up your data,
format the hard drive, and re-install your preferred OS and
applications from scratch.

Thanks Bruce

Thank you so much. So, how do I back up my stuff and re-format this computer. I don't have my XP disk here to re-install. Can I back up my computer and then put the OS back on this computer from the backup? I have purchased an external hard drive to use. fly4sport

Apparently I installed it to run seperately. I have been told that I need to back up, format and re-install....

Your data is backed up, but the backup copy of the OS will
have the same problem that you're trying to repair.

You need an XP CD of the same class/type as is installed on
your computer to do a repair installation. You may need
to buy an XP CD. If you buy an upgrade CD and it can't
identify a current installation of XP you will need some
prior version of Windows to allow it to install. If you
have your XP CD in storage or left it somewhere, which is
cheaper, buying a new CD or waiting/traveling to get it?

It would be nice if you included at least part of the thread
so we know what you're answering and what you mean.
