Hello

The streaming video on this web site stopped working the other day. I
thought the site was down but after a couple of days I booted up my
wife's Win2K Pro pc and the site was working fine.

My pc runs XP Pro with all updates. The player itself shows in FireFox
and Internet Explorer 7. However it sits there saying it is connecting
to the media. After a wait both FF and IE both just stop trying to
connect.

I thought maybe it was a ZoneAlarm problem so I uninstalled ZA and
after the reboot I tried the site again. Still didn't work. I then
rolled Windows Media Player back to WMP 10....still no good. I
reinstalled WMP 11 and as I suspected the video would not run.

ALL other sites with streaming video work just fine. Any ideas?
Here is the web page.

http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/multimed/waikiki.asp

Like I said my wife's Win2K pc shows the video.

ActiveX is enabled

This has nothing to do with Windows XP.

Take your problem elsewhere.

Now I see why they call you Grumpy.

If 3 browsers all stopped working with that site then that leaves XP
itself.

Maybe you're missing some codecs.

What is the exact message you get?

I don't get a message at all. The "embedded WMP" shows in FireFox,
Internet Explorer and Opera but the screen stays blank. FF shows a
line saying Connecting to media but after about 15-20 seconds it stops
and says Ready. Clicking on >Play does nothing.

I have now found another site where the video will not show. I suspect
you are correct about the codecs because some types of stream work
just fine while these 2 don't.

If that's the case, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx

and see "Codec Installation Package for Windows Media Player 7.1 and
later"

Oddly enough, there is no mention of WMP 11.

Also, the K-Lite Codec Pack is highly regarded:

http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm

And if you decide to go with the Mega version, you'll be able to use
Media Player Classic.

Ok....I think I'm on to something here. While installing the K-Lite
package I got a warning that the DirectShow filter was corrupt or at
least not working. It also said something about the Registry.

So, the question is how do I replace or fix DirectShow?

You need to provide the exact messages.

But a prelimiary Google search yields the following from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/playing_files.mspx

Q. Why does the Player keep crashing?

A. The Player interacts with many system components, including drivers,
codecs, and DirectShow filters. It is possible that the Player is not
responding because of a faulty or incompatible component from another
provider, such as a codec pack. (Examples include the DivXNetworks Nimo,
Tsunami, and K-Lite codec packs, the SoftRom.Net ACE Mega, and the All
in 1 codec packs.) Incompatibilities are known to exist with some of the
components in the codec packs. The incompatibilities can cause serious
playback issues in Windows Media Player and other players, can lead to
system corruption, and can make it difficult for Microsoft Product
Support Services to diagnose and troubleshoot playback problems. For
more information about resolving this problem, see the Using codecs FAQ
[see Link One below].

To protect the security of your computer, be sure to only download
programs, codec packs, and other items from sources that you trust. To
learn more about security, see the Windows Media Player 11 [Link Two] or
Windows Media Player 10 [Link Three] security statement.

----------------------------------------------------------------

For now, uninstall Windows Media Player, and make Media Player Classic
the default to see if the problem is the DirectShow filter or WMP. You
could always reinstall WMP and codecs afterward, using the "Codec
Installation Packages for IT Professionals" link listed at the top.

Do you have SP2 installed?

I am now cross-posting this to microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
(apologies to the regulars if this is frowned upon, but it seems like
the proper thing to do at this point). Let's see if others have been
experiencing the same thing.

How do you uninstall WMP? I used Add/Remove to roll it back to WMP10
but WMP doesn't show in Add/Remove after that.

Yes, with all updates to this minute. That may be part of the problem
because afterthe last updates on the 13th is about when this problem
showed up.

I originally posted in there but got no responce.

Did you check the Show Updates box at the top?

Also, see:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0084.mspx

You may need to use System Restore if the Add/Remove method doesn't
work.

Interesting. Can you identify which update may have caused this problem?
Perhaps a subsequent update has fixed this issue.

I have now but it shows nothing

My last restore point is too far back for my liking. :-( I may just
reinstall XP SP2.

Before you do that, see:
http://techie-buzz.com/technology-buzz/how-to-uninstall-windows-media-player-11.html
By the way, the error I get is 80040241 and the fix shown is only for
XP SP1.

What is the whole error message, and when precisely does it present
itself?

And please clarify which version of WMP you currently have.

Also have you seen
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0074.mspx

I'm not running WMP11....I'm running 10. Plus the fact when I deleted
the WMP11 runtime then ran Window Washer it must have nuked the
uninstall folders they mention in the above site.

See above....wmp10

The problem I keep running into is all the "fixes" lead to an old XP
SP1 fix and it will not load as it sees I have SP2.

At this point all I want to do is find a DirectShow fix or some way of
relacing any or all DirectShow files. The MS sites keeps leading me in
circles and ends up at fixes which will not run on a PC with XP SP2.

Some (perhaps) final ideas before you decide on a clean install:

You're not the only one having problems with WMP. Your DirectShow
problem might be because of a corrupted download. It might equally be
because of your WMP issues (frankly, I suspect the latter). I don't
recall your mentioning whether or not you tried making MPC your default
player. If you haven't try it and see what happens.

Regarding your WMP problems, reinstall WMP 11 and then un-reinstall it.
Then you might be able to properly uninstall WMP 10 to revert to your
original WMP 9.

I suppose you could use the same trick with the K-Lite pack (assuming
you have straightened out your WMP mess). That is, uninstall, then
re-install.

Post exact, complete error messages.

If no joy, I wouldn't blame you for starting fresh.

This PC was loaded with XP Pro + SP2....as far as I know there IS no
Media Player Classic on it.

Having started life with XP Pro SP2 is the reason the fixes don't work
for WMP as they are all for XP Pro SP1....not SP2.

The error message is just a box that takes me to an MS page that shows
just what I see on the above page when you click on Error #80040241.
It near the top left of the list....2nd one down. The fix mentioned is
one of the ones that are only good for SP1 not SP2.

It's really starting to look that way. Another strange thing just
happened. All the games like solitaire are gone...nowhere to be found.

I believe you misunderstand.

It's correct that Media Player Classic does not ship with Windows XP;
it's a third-party app!

In an earlier post, I said that Mega version of the K-Lite Codec Pack
installation includes Media Player Classic. And since you were having
issues with WMP, I suggested you make *MPC* your default player to see
if you would then have better luck.

Actually, as I read it, there really isn't a fix. If the file was
encoded using a codec not supported by WMP, then WMP just won't play
it--period. Another good reason to try out MPC.

I will....I grabbed a "lighter" version....should have grabbed the
mega.

Both...I did the old Add/Remove Components with the XP CD in the tray.
Worked perfectly.

It has been an adventure. :-) And as you say other people are
reporting similar troubles.

I'll try that as soon as the hockey game is over. :-)

Just by reading this and other newsgroups, yes, I've seen lots of
complaints.

I think I see why you may have had a problem. According to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer

it's impossible to roll back from WMP 11 to WPM 10 once a program like
Ccleaner or Window Washer is used (because it deletes the hidden folder
$NtUninstallwmp11$). That's why I originally suggested reinstalling WMP
11.
