Strange USB Problem

Hello everyone.

I am having a strange USB issue on my dell laptop (D820)...it has worked for
a LONG time and then in the last few months, something must have been
installed or changed to create this issue...but I can only fix it temporarily.

Firstly, the USB ports work generally speaking...if I install a USB Thumb
Drive or Mouse or Keyboard, no problem. However, if I install a memory card
reader (to pull pictures from my camera) or a USB Verizon air card then I
have the following problems:

If I plug in the memory card reader, I get the beep noise from windows that
it registered, then when I put a memory card in it, I get nothing, nor can I
see the card via Explorer. If I run the Microsoft Utility Autofix.exe and
point it at the G: drive (in this case) it runs a fix on the local policy
(see below), then I log out and back in and voila! it works. After a few
reboots, though I am back to the initial error.

If boot or reboot with my USB Verizon aircard plugged in it detects and
works. If I plug it in while on, it never registers...if I remove the drivers
and reinstall while on, it then registers and works, but again a few reboots
later I am back to the problem.

It says local policy, so I don't believe that this is a policy that my
company is enforcing...also no one else at work is experiencing the same
thing...

The autofix spits out the following:

AutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]

When you connect to a domain, there is often a group policy that is
copied into your local policies and may change settings that are
there. See if it reverts behavior after connecting to your work
network. When it's misbehaving, you might want to see what
NoDriveTypeAutorun is set to.

This Microsoft article might shed some insight:
"How to correct "disable Autorun registry key" enforcement in
Windows" <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953252>

also:
"The NoDriveTypeAutoRun subkey value is reset to the original
default value on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, on a Windows
XP-based computer, or on a Windows 2000-based computer"

Hi Jeff,

With both of the card readers I have, I have to plug the
card into the reader BEFORE I connect the reader.

When you initially installed the AirCard, did you make sure
that the AirCard was NOT connected? A lot of USB devices
want the drivers installed BEFORE you connect the device.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have the aircard out when I remove and reinstall the drivers.

With the readers, what's interesting, is that this used to work...then one
day stopped and I now have to run the autofix.
