Strange taskbar behaviour (notification area)

F

Falcon

Ei system 4415 Laptop, Celeron 2.4 GHz. 248 MB of RAM, Windows XP Home
Edition SP1.

Although several programs start automatically at boot up, (McAfee Security
Centre etc.), the taskbar only ever shows the MSN messenger icon in the
notification area. The "hide inactive icons" box is unchecked, and there
doesn't seem to be any reference to the problem on the Microsoft website, or
in the Help and Support section. Un-checking and rechecking boxes such as
the "show icon in notification area when connected" in network connections
has no effect; the icons simply refuse to appear. I'm also using a Netgear
MA111 to connect to my home network and internet. The adaptor and network
works well, there's just no icon in the notification area.

I get two errors at start-up:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 16/08/2004
Time: 11:04:44
User: N/A
Computer: EILT
Description:
The Task Scheduler service terminated with the following error:
Not enough resources are available to complete this operation.

(This service starts normally later in the start-up process)

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 16/08/2004
Time: 11:05:59
User: N/A
Computer: EILT
Description:
The Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service hung on starting.

I'm using a Netgear DG834G firewall router and McAfee Security Centre (incl
firewall) on all computers, so the ICF is not used.

Any suggestions for a fix would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

1) Download the latest version of Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) including
the latest definitions and run it in safe-mode (it seems to find and be able
to get rid of more in safe-mode).

2) Run a full virus scan on the hard drive from test-bed system -or- run a
full virus scan in safe mode (make sure your definitions are up-to-date).

I've run into many cases where a virus gets into a system and damages the
anti-virus software which in turn causes other things not to work properly.
Try fully uninstalling Mcafee and re-installing it.

Thanks for the suggestions. The system was clean, and re-installing McAfee
didn't work. After a little more manipulation it appears that several
factors are at work.

McAfee caused the boot-up error problem. Unloading the firewall improved the
boot-up time and stopped the errors listed below ... and removing the virus
software cured the notification area problem. I then swapped programs. Trend
Micro Internet Security, which used to reside on the desktop, is now on the
laptop, with McAfee on the desktop.

I get similar problems with the notification tray, unless I boot up first,
then plug in the MA111 adaptor. Then everything works fine. The slow boot-up
and errors have stopped.

So in summary, now that I'm running Trend Micro, the notification area fails
if I boot up with antivirus software running *and* the MA111 USB adaptor
plugged in. The notification area works if either one is missing. No errors
are being reported and boot-up times are better (which is an improvement)..

It's a little annoying and very confusing, but manageable.

Try configuring your internet security software manually so that your
network is on the 'trusted' list. Letting the software figure out your
network by itself is just an invitation for errors.

"Trend Micro internet Security" and "configure" is an oxymoron, since
the Trend Micro Internet Security firewall can only be "configured" by
increasing or decreasing the level of protection, and nothing else
(since there are no ways to configure anything else in the program)

Thanks both of you. The taskbar hides icons if either McAfee or Trend
products are installed - and - the USB adaptor is attached. I was able to
'trust' the IP's associated with the network with McAfee, (I agree you can't
do that with Trend) but the problem still occurred with McAfee if start-up
occurred with the adaptor connected.
