Strange Startup

MS WINXP - SP3 and up to date apart from to-days Black Tuesday stuff :)
IE 6 & OE6.
All seemed to be normal until the desktop came up - it was displayed as the
XP layout.
I had set the display from the Start Menu to 'Classic' etc.
I checked and the 'Classic' setting was shown as set.
So I re-set to 'Start' then back again to Classic - applied and nothing
happened.
So I set it again to classic and rebooted - still came up in XP display.
Then the desktop froze in that nothing would open from desktop icons or
quick launch etc.

A reboot with the restart button just produced a black screen with a movable
cursor.
Tried two or three times more - same results.
Then the next time, I got through to the desktop - still in XP colours etc -
although I could move the cursor around, nothing would open - so could not
scan with any security stuff.
Then all of a sudden, I had sound - moved from news to music to news to
documentary type stuff etc.
I got task manager to open, but no applications were showing and the idle
was 99%.
As I could not do the usual start/log off/shut down, I tried the reset
button on the front - nothing - tried the on/off switch on the front -
nothing - so switched off with the on/off button on the back of the case.
Switched on with this then the front button, and went straight through to
the desktop - still in XP display.
Managed a full scan with 'in-house' antvirus[Radial Point] - nothing.
Then tried Superantispy - would not open from desktop shortcut - came up as
'error'
Malwarebites opened OK - full scan - found a couple of rootkit
stuff/cookies - all deleted.
Did MS Software Removal - nothing there.
Managed to come out via start/log off etc - restarted and there was the
desktop in Classic display - did a couple of minor adjustments re font etc
and applied - all OK.

At the moment I thought I would post first before getting on with the Black
Tuesday stuff which would involve re-boots - not too keen to do this yet.
Event viewer shows a lot of service control manager errors 7023 - but I have
always had this show since the computer was new - the problem resolves
itself within a second. Application shows a number of errors/warnings for
the times I tried to open/start the programme - nothing else shows.

At the moment, the only other matters that seem to have changed are - Nero
backup fails - the target shown is only Local Disk C: - I have no target
path to the D: drive and when I went into System Restore, all had gone. I
have tried to set a restore point but I am told that I need to reboot first.

If anybody can shed any light on what may have happened, I would appreciate
it.

Update -
Since posting, matters have become more critical.
I have tried to run malwarebytes, superantispy and Spybot - none will open
and run.
I uninstalled all three and tried to DL them.
IE at first blocked their DL in a popup - chose to ignore with the options -
saved to desktop but again none would open and run. IE is set to default as
per normal.
I will try to run them from the sites in the morning.

"Malwarebites opened OK - full scan - found a couple of rootkit
