Strange Sound Problem

Hello

Recently my sound stopped playing in windows. The sound icon disappeared
from the taskbar as well. However, sound still plays in iTunes and WMP.
Sound will not play in windows, or internet explorer. The startup sounds are
gone, and if you goto themes in the control panel, you cannot preview any
sound, the play button is greyed out. I can still open the sound volume
control in the control panel and adjust sound volume that way. Or i can use
the buttons on my laptop to change the volume. I have uninstalled,
reinstalled the drivers for the sound card, uninstalled and reinstalled SP2
from the computer. I have reinstalled the plug and play enumerator device.
Tried just about anything, if anyone has heard of or knows how to fix this
problem, it would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I have a similar problem. "No Audio Device" is shown and the hardware and
drivers are present

I tried deleting and reinstalling the Plug and Play Software Enumerator. No
matter what I do, I still end up with a Code 31 and the yellow exclamation
point. I even took the suggestion of one thread where one goes into the
registry and deletes all instances of swenum. Furthermore the driver resides
in UNKNOWN/0002 instead of SYSTEM/0000 like on a working machine. I have
tried three different machine.inf files to load the device.
