Strange Recovery Console start

M

Monticus

Using a Dell Dimension 4500 running XP Home, I inserted
the recovery CD from Dell that loads the Recovery
Console. It displayed all the welcome info correctly,
however, the prompt reads simply C: , amd does not contain
the windows directory. When I execute a dir, it tells me
that it cannot enumerate the directory information. I can
switch to the D drive, but do not know what to do at that
point, as there is no windows directory there, just the
support files.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Monticus

You can't access folders unless you can log on. You system sounds too damaged for you to log on. Therefore you can pretty much repair disk errors only.

Thanks a lot!

Does that mean at that point that I can run the chkdsk /r
option?

Thanks!

But I am only getting the C: prompt, nothing numbered and
nothing mentioning C:[backslash]windows ( I keep getting \
instead of a backslash) At this point without being asked
to login to admin, and not having a numbered prompt option
with a windows directory, I am not really in the recovery
console, am I?

Thanks!

Your computer is f*cked. For security reasons you aren't allowed access unless you can login but you can't login.

Chkdsk requires access to files in windows. Try it.

What is your problem anyway.

It's the old UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME BSOD. There has been
no new hardware or software installed. It just began
happening. If I am ****ed, then I am ****ed, but does
that mean I need a new HD or is it reformattable?

Thanks!

OK so I may be f*ck#d, but do I need to buy a new HD, or
can I reinstall XP on this one?

Thanks!

I don't know what your original error was. But generally a reinstall is all that is needed. But the RC you have can fix a narrow range of problems (and in full mode a few more, not many). But if you can't login you may not be able to upgrade (upgrading a windows with itself is a repair install).

The exact error message is important to give relevent advice.

Upon startup, XP begins to load for a sec, then the BSOD
appears, and there is the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME message
telling me that windows might have been shut down
improperly, or that there is a problem with installed
hardware or software, or that I need to disable the BIOS
cache or shadowing. This is not the first time that I am
starting windows, nor is it an upgrade. I am then told to
restart, try safe mode, or try using the last known good
configuaration.

The error message: STOP: 0x000000ED (0x81261c98,
0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

From the KB I found that the second parm in the parens
tells me that the system file is unstable and that the
hard drive cannot be loaded.

I then put the recovery disk in, restarted, hit any key,
and chose 'R'. The loaded files were listed at the bottom
of the screen, and then I received the Welcome to the
Recovery Disk message. However, instead of being given a
list of windows install locations, I only get C:

cannot successfully enter any commands ex. dir, run, etc.
and cannot cd to the windows directory. I am told that CD:
[backslash]windows is not a valid command.

If you need anymore details, or have any other questions I
am more than happy to try and answer.

I really appreciate all the time you have invested in this.
