Strange programs

I have several programs running in the background on my
system, and they are responsible for spamming popups, but
they are "critical system processes," and cannot be
closed, or removed. The Programs are: ALG.exe, DAmon.exe,
datray.exe, CSRSS.exe, smss.exe, GMTsys.exe, and
ctfmon.exe. When I search my hard drive for the programs
and delete them manually, i get an error saying that
Microsoft Money will not function properly. My big
question is this: Can i re-install windows and still keep
all of the files I have downloaded, all the programs I
have installed, etc.? If so, how? If not, then is there a
way to get rid of these programs permanently, without
damaging the stability of my system?

Hi Kelly,

I'm not the OP'er, I just wanted to thank you for being here to help us. You
are more to the point than anyone else in the group.

Happy Holidays to you,
JAX

Hi again Kelly, is your clock right? I just noticed your post is about 2
hours ahead of my PC and the clock on the wall.

Huh?

I switched from Eastern to Mountain but, that was me, not my PC. I'm stuck
here!

LOL! Am a born and raised Southern Louisiana Cajun and "ain't" going no
where. <w>

Taylor,

Many of these exe's are not responsible for spam popups.

An example:

FILENAME: Alg.exe.
PROGRAM NAME: Application Layer Gateway.
DESCRIPTION: Part of Windows XP that provides support for ICS and Internet
Connection Firewall (ICF).
RECOMMENDED ACTION: If a third-party firewall warns you that ALG.exe wants
access, check to make sure you're not double-firewalled. If you are, disable
ICF. If you are using neither ICF nor ICS and are warned that ALG.exe is
trying to access the Net, deny it. A Trojan horse or worm may be trying to
use it as a backdoor.

Thank you very much, JAX. :o)

And hmm, on the clock issue. I don't see anything visible here to reflect
that. Thanks for the note though, will check into it.
