Strange Problem

Just came back from vacation and when I tried to access the internet after re
starting my computer, nothing happened. I can not gracefully shut down. I
can not use add/remove programs. I can not use system restore. Everything
hangs. Looking at services, it seems my computer browser service is stuck in
the "stopping" mode. I recently added some scuba dive software (last new
thing I've done) and my thinking was to remove it but I cant.

Everything was fine before I shut down before vacation, now that I'm back it
isn't working.....

Any thoughts?
Regards

What can you do? Will the computer boot into safe mode? (Tap the F8 key
repeatedly while the computer boots) Has anyone to your knowledge used the
computer while you where gone?

No, can not get into safe mode or use and "system" type programs. Tried Anti
Virus, a command line script to get into the firewall or any such type of
repair feature.

No, no one was able to use my computer while I was gone. Thank God for my
laptop....
Regards... Hoping for a solution

You may want to try a Repair of XP

1. Boot your computer using the Windows XP CD.

2. When prompted press Enter to install Windows XP.

3. After pressing F8 to accept the End-Use License
Agreement, setup should detect your existing Windows installation.

4. Press R to begin the recovery process.

5. Setup will copy the necessary files to your hard drive
and then reboot.

6. Do not press any key to boot from the CD-ROM this time.
Instead let setup continue.

After the repair is complete, be sure to reinstall the latest service packs
and updates since they will have been removed during the repair process.

Well, I tried the repair install. Didn't work. Got an error message after
the install finished telling me to run an anti virus software and/or run
checkdsk /f. So, I pulled out my old hard drive that I pulled from that
machine a couple of months ago. Installed it in the box and the same
problems that I experienced on the "new" drive, were happening on the old.
Now I am confused.

I can see the other machine on our network, Computer browser service is
still trying to stop, can't connect to the internet or get anything from
outlook express. Can not shut down, sticks in "saving settings" so I have to
power off to shut down. I'm running the anti virus software now but have
little hope that this will fix anything.

Any other thoughts???
Help!!
