My sister's notebook (XP, SP2) has this strange problem that she can't
seem to fix via virus or spyware cleaning: Time to time, the taskbar
randomly crashes, and when it the taskbar restarts itself, the IE
security setting is at minimum (accept all cookies), when she usually
has it at medium. What could be the cause?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

not all problems are attributed
to malware. thus the reason
why your antiviral are coming
up clean.

also, windows is uniquely designed
so if the taskbar crashed then windows
has rebuilt it. there would be a
number of reasons attributing to
events such as these.

what you could do is to see if the
problems your are experiencing in
normal mode windows are present
in safemode as well.

you can boot into safemode w/
networking and use your
internet connection and browser.

after a while you will see if
the problem dissipates or lingers
in safemode.

if you find that safemode runs
perfectly, then this is a sign that
normal mode windows requires
some tuning up or cleaning.

here are the instructions as
noted by steps 1, 2 and 3:

After this event occurs go check your system and application log files. It
may help identify where the problem is.
