Strange Problem--any ideas??

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with XP HOME. While working on the internet
today, it suddenly froze. The cursor would not move and in fact the computer
was totally unresponsive (except the fan was going). I had to hold the
on/off button down to shut it down.

When I turned it on again, I could run my word processor. But when I tried
to get on the internet (OE and IE) it wouldn't work and then everything
slowed down. I tried to get to System Restore but that program was
unresponsive.

This happened again on a reboot.

I then shut it down for 5 minutes. When I turned it back on, same problem.
Couldn't run OE or IE. I was about to (shudder) call Dell when after 5
minutes or so, IE suddenly booted. Since then everything works perfectly. I
can get into System Restore and in general things look good.

Any ideas as to what might have caused the problem?? I had run my AVG
anti-virus software last night and at that time it indicated no problems (my
habits are generally not virus-prone). It has been a while since I ran my
Ad-Aware. Could spyware cause this? Could the computer have overheated (the
fan had been running for quite awhile, but I would assume that would
mitigate any overheating). Might I suddenly have a memory chip problem?

Hopefully, this was just an anomily and won't happen again, but is there
anything I can check?

I have a similar problem and I'll be watching here for potential solutions.

Sounds heat related to me

Barry:

It hasn't happened again. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
Eliminated quite a bit of stuff.

Hi Mel,
Is your Mouse Opetical and what make is it, Look in the event viewer for
any Error messages and Post it here.
Right click if you could My Computer and select Properties then on Hardware
Tab then Device Manager and see your mouse if it is install or there is
exclamation Marke on it.
Try to unplug your Mouse and Plug it again and see if your OS will detect it
and be sure it is not loose.

Actually, that sounds like a heating problem.
The first ~5Min shutdown, if you actually removed power, means
the fans went off too, which allowed the heat inside the
components to move to the surface, but without fans, all the heat
sensors can feel that as added heat.
After another 5 minutes of, I assume, being powered on, you
said it suddenly booted up; that would mean things finally cooled
down enough to allow it to start working again, and off you went.
Actually, I'm having that very problem at the moment: One of
my internal fans went belly up, so until I can get a replacement,
I have an access bay opened, and a box fan blowing into the
opening to make up for the missing fan.
Since it hasn't really gotten extremely hot yet, I'm also
going to add an additional fan just for GPs, to help the system
out a little more.

It's also possible, if the weather has been humid, that the
"problem" was a short caused my moisture in the dust & dirt
inside the computer case. If you try to mess around inside the
case though, be very careful and leave the computer plugged in
but not running, while you do that. There really aren't any
exposed dangerous voltages you can reach, but you -could- cause
invisible static discharges that might damage some sensitive
components; that's why you leave it plugged in; for the static
protection, although it's just minimal - damage can still be
caused, so don't let the vacuum or anything actually touch any
components.
At the same time don't let me scare you off from pulling out a
layer of dust inside if that's the case. Just be careful, that's
all. And do not use compressed air; use a vacuum instead.

Yes, I have a logitech optical mouse (USB connection).

But when I rebooted later, the mouse was unplugged.

Regarding Event Viewer, should I look for Application errors?

hERE are my Event Viewer results. There are only 3 categories: Applications,
Security, System.
The first two seem to occur from time-to-time. The last one is the error I
experienced (based on the date/time listed). But I don't know if that tells
me the error I had or the result of the freeze.
Any ideas about any of these errors/warnings??
Windows saved user MEL\MYNAME registry while an application or service was
still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

There is application did not release the memory while you Trun OFF your
Machine and cause this error message, some badly written
applications/Software can cause this or Malware on your system or the
shortage of RAM and Disk space.
