Strange noises from the Beastie.

My PC (the Beastie), running Windows XP-SP2 on an Gigabyte GA-81815-GMFD Mb
with an Intel P4 @ 3.2GHz with 1024MB RAM, will sometimes "beep" for about
nine seconds every minute. The sound is not coming through the speakers, as I
can still here it with the speakers turned off, and adjusting the volume
control has ni effect.

It is not consistent, it may happen while I am playing a game, with sound,
working in Word, browsing the web, doing practically anything. Sometimes, if
I use Windows Media Player to play a CD, or a .mp3 from the hard-drive, it
will cease, not immediately, and not restart. But again it may restart
immediately after the playback is finished.

This morning it has been nagging me for two hours, while I was playing a
game, trying to get to the end of a section before having to save and close
down. I played an Eric Clapton CD, and it stopped for 25 minutes, and it has
just started agin. This is driving me nuts.

Can anyone please help?

This sounds like a possible board or BIOS level error warning, being
produced through the PC speaker (this is NOT the sound card). You need to
make a careful description of the beep and read the motherboard manual and
support sites for interpretations.

A couple of questions. How recent are your backups, and are the fans
running? when was the last time you cleaned the fans (do not use a vaccuum
cleaner)?

Steve, I got the same type of beeping from a alarm I set for cpu
overheating. Are your temps Ok?
