strange mouse behaviour

D

.D.E.

I recently purchased a new system to upgrade an older one.
New system specs: Windows XP Pro, sp2, all updates done.
Intel dual core 2, 2.4 GHz. Video: NVIDIA geforce 7600 256 mb
GA-965P-S3 (rev. 1.0) mother board with 2 gb ram, 2-250 gb ata hard drives,
Sound blaster pro 1024 platinum.

What happens is that the system runs ok. The mouse, a Logitech usb mouse
(latest drivers: MW9791) will simply pause for about a second or two. When
you move the mouse the cursor stays still, but you can see the mouse high
lighting other menu items. I've removed the drivers, and gone back to the
original windows xp drivers. I've tried a serial mouse, changed between the
usb and serial connections. No changes. I've checked the polling for the
mouse compared to my old system and new one. The system also has a tenancy
to hiccup or stutter when playing music. I did disable the on board sound
and prevent the drivers from loading for on board sound.
I returned the system back to the store and it came back as working fine.

I'm going to remove the sb live 1024 pro board to see what happens. The
mouse did the same thing before I installed the sblive.
It seems that the system is just pausing for a few seconds. I was thinking
of upgrading the bios for the mobo from f6 to f8.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

MW9791 -- MouseWare??? If yes, these drivers are for older Logitech
mice. Newer logitech mice now are to use SetPoint drivers.

Did you install Service Pack 2?

Did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard???

Are the USB ports USB 2.0?

Did you turn off the "Allow Windows to power down" the USB ports
options in Device Manager?

Are you running AntiVirus and AntiSpyware utilities?

Service pack 2 installed with latest windows updates.
I'm not sure about the chipset drivers, but I think that the shop installed
the mob chipset drivers since the onboard sound is installed.
I'll update the mouse drivers to the new set point ones.
USB are USB 2.0 and are not set to power down.
AVGAS 7.5 antivirus and spy 5.3

SetPoint are only for the "newer" models and do not support the
"older" MouseWare compatible mice. If the mouse was delivered with
MouseWare then it only works with the MouseWare drivers.

I'm also going to check the IRQ settings as well.

Well, I removed the older mouse drivers and updated them to the latest on
logitech's site. Version 9.7.9 build 25.

Same problem. I also noticed that the system did a couple of random
reboots. So tomorrow I'm going to remove the mouse drivers, upgrade the
bios on the mobo. Remove the sound card, replace it with another one I
have.

Any other suggestions?

I updated the motherboard bios to the latest version, I also updated sound
card drivers, video drivers and chipset files. Same issues. Changed the
mouse, rolled back to windows xp default mouse drivers.

There seems to be some sort of interuption issues. I've checked the IRQ's
and there are no problems there. The system just seems to pause for a moment
or two and then continue.

Any other suggestions?

What other USB devices might you be using at the same time as the
mouse?

Is the USB mouse directly connected onto the motherboard's USB
ports?

the only other USB device is my palm pilot which is not connected. When that
device is connected, there is no change in the system. The usb mouse when
connected to the usb connection, is directly to the mobo. The other usb card
reader is connected to the mobo. It is not used that often. The stutter on
the mouse and audio playback is random. I can't seem to make it happen when
I want to. I've checked cpu usage, which programs are taking up cpu cycles,
etc. I also updated the sblive drivers from the windows site, reslotted the
sound card, removed it and ran the onboard audio drivers. Same issues. Could
it be the mobo? Ram? I had these tested at the shop and the system did not
generate any problems with the 24 hour stress test on the system.

Any other suggestions? I think taking the system back to the shop and seeing
if they can look at it again.

You might want to try a powered USB hub and connect the mouse to one
of the ports on the hub.

The mouse is connected to the usb or mouse port directly to the motherboard.
I did change the poling rate to 300 from 100. Still the same, but not as
bad. So it looks like there is something with the motherboard I think.
Any other suggestions?
