Strange Issues Adding Windows XP Machine to Windows 2000 PDC

Jay Douglas

Hello All,
I'm having issues adding a Windows XP machine to a Windows 2000 Domain
Controller. I'm recieving the following error:

"The computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error
has occured:
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is
correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows
still cannot find the network path,. contact your network administrator."

- I am working with a fresh install of XP (MSDN) and all of the service pack
and updates.
- I'm connecting to a Windows 2000 Domain Controller with all of the updates
- Other work stations are not having any issues connecting to the domain
controller
- I am able to navigate to other computers that are a part of the domain
- I can ping the PDC
- I can browse to the domain controller by \\DOMAINCONTROLLER however there
are no shares able to be viewed
- I can not use net send to connect to a specific share on the domain
controller

Here are my error messages from the file NetSetup.txt:

Sounds like a DNS issue. Verify the clients arepointing
towards your W2k DNS server. Next open a dos prompt
and run nslookup <domainname> (FQDN). Do you get
a response?

Michael,
Thanks for the speedy response.

Okay, there's a problem with the Windows 2000 DNS Services ... They
don't exist because the person that was here before me set the network
domain up as squarei.com ... well squarei.com has about 30 different sub
domains (i.e. services.squarei.com) .. there is a Bind DNS server that
manages all the squarei.com information and unfortunately I can't change
that configuration ... I would upgrade to Windows 2003 today if I could
change the domain name without having serious issues with the Exchange
server that sits on the domain server....

With that said, all workstations currently point to the DNS servers
provided by our ISP.

I have been able to add PCs to the domain without any problems in the
past. Same configuration, same setup. The following message from
NetSetup.txt tells the subject PC is finding the domain controller (I may be
wrong on this fact):
03/23 11:28:14 NetpDsGetDcName: found DC '\\EXCHANGE' in the specified
domain

Maybe I need to do some changes to the server to get the network in a more
friendly environment.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

Hmmm? Looks like you are relying on netbios for name resolution.
Do you have WINS running? Immediately after a failed join attempt
open a dos prompt and run nbtstat -c. What do you see?

J

Jay Douglas

Okay, as hokey as this sounds, here's what fixed the issue:

- I looked under DNS services, it was running, but there were no Reverse or
Forward lookup zones.
- I delete the server out of the DNS tree
- Rebooted the domain server
- Magically, I can add domains

I know too little about Win DNS to know what, where, or why .... But
none-the-less, thanks Michael for bringing the DNS issue to my attention.
Hopefully, some day I'll find a way to change the domain name with out
messing up Exchange.

You had me going for a second. I was going to say.. W2k
needs DNS. Glad to hear you got it working and thank you
for the update.
