Strange install problem with Canon Lide 30

I've been fighting for a bit now, trying to get this scanner to work
with my windows 2000 machine.

I've installede and uninstalled, plugged and unplugged. I've tried
different usb ports (both 2.0 and 1.1 ports).

What I've ended up with is installing it on my wifes w2k machine where
it worked the first time.

But I want it to work on my machine.

Status on that one is that when I plug it in, I get a "finding new
hardware Canon Lide 30 blah, blah" and no error messages. When I try to
scan something I get no reaction from the scanner (also it doesn't
calibarate the way it does on my wifes machine when I while booting),
but I do get an error saying that the scanner isn't connected.

I've uninstallede the drives while the scanner is unplugged and
reinstalled the drivers the way it's recommended on canons homepage, and
as mentioned it's found and configured when I plug it in. It's just not
working.

Any suggestions?

Quick question, are you plugging the the scanner diectly into your PC or
going through a hub, and if you are plugging in directly how old is your PC.

For those who have never come across a Canon Lide 30 a little background:
This scanner takes its power from the USB connection, so an unpowered hub
and certain chipsets (when multiple devices are attached to their UBS ports)
fail to supply enough power for the Scanner to work.

I've a hub on one of my usb1.1 ports (keyboard and mouse). I've
connected the scanner directly to the second port, not through the hub.

I've a usb2.0 pci card installed (InnoVision EIO card VIA), with nothing
else connected.

When I look at the usb2.0 hub (in the device manager) it says that 500mA
is available per port and that the scanner requires 500mA.

The motherboard in both machines is a K7S5A (ECS) which is a couple of
years old.

I got the Canon up and running on my wife's computer once (Win98SE,
PII350, Intel board prob. 4 years old), and then was unable to get it
to run again. I had connected it to a hub successfully, then it
refused to work again after a reboot. I switched it to a direct
connection to no avail. Since then I have uninstalled/reinstalled
several times (and deleted reg entries manually). Although driver
installation produces a file not found error, the scanner is
recognized by the system, but the scanner software cannot find it.

I have troubleshooted (troubleshot?) per Canon support with no result.
Any help would be appreciated.

Paul W.

PS: The scanner works fine on my WinXP Pro system.
