As some of you may or may not know, I bought an 8800GTS the other day. So far its proved to be an excellent card, however (and probably inevitabely) I have suffered some hiccups.

Frequently, whatever I was doing, whether it be listening to music or playing DiRT, the screen would hang for a few split seconds. I went into even viewer, and almost every 30 or so seconds, this same error occurered:

Event Type: Error

Description:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.

The link it gave me suggested a problem regarding the CD drive. So, sure enough, I opened the drive only to find it would not close again for at least a minute or two.

I really don't know what to do; I tried installing the beta drivers for the card and more stable ones, but to no avail.

Any pointers in the right direction would be a great help :)

CD drivers didn't want to install

I downloaded the 158 (i think) and the beta drivers that V_R offered. Tried both of those and the same problem occured...

hmm now it seems fine. all running smoothly

Maybe its a setting for the cd/dvd drives thats caused it.

I dont think its got anything to do with the Video drivers.

Is your DVD Drive IDE? Try going into device manager, uninstall the CD/DVD drive drivers and reboot the pc. :)

aha!

the peripheral name of the device is ATAPI.

which, was the error source.

It is IDE, yes. How will i be able to reinstall the drivers for the dvd drive?

There are a few to select from...which one (s) shall i disable or uninstall? Primary IDE channel?

Oh and sorry Abarbarian, I thought you meant the video card drivers that came on the CD :D.

Its happening again.

exactly the same error, exactly the same faults.

it really affects the general performance.

the reinstallation of the dvd drive drivers worked, but it doesn't seem to be permanent.

any "permanent" suggestions? :)

Check cables, try drive in other pc, try new drive. :)

By the way, are your hard drives SATA or IDE?

I take it you pc didn't do this before the 88 was installed?

What I have done is disable the drive causing all this fuss. At least now the drive causing the fuss can't do anything, meaning its running smoothly for now...

yup, nothing like this happened before the 8800 installation. I may have knocked about the cables because i kept faffing around so much with the card. I'll have a proper look when I have the time.

I think they are IDE, according to the device manager.

Wel if you think that has fixed it, great. :)

What is your IDE device on IDEPort 0? If its one of the harddrives you need to run a diagnostic on the disk pronto.

If i were you i'd pull the side off real quick and check your cables, will only take a min. ;)

It could also be a lack of power from your PSU, but thats an outside bet for now.

How do I find the IDE device on IDEPort 0? Is that in device manager?

The cables seem to be fine, nothing is out of place.

I also had an idea that it was because of a lack of power...

Maybe, Everest or Sandra may tell you, i'd just pop into BIOS personally. Just exit without saving. ;)

Cables deffo ruled out then? Power could be the issue, still not sure yet.....

Did you notice it your drive is SATA or not?
I still say you should run a diagnostic on the hard drives. Go to the manufacturer website and DL their diag tool, and run them. Best be safe, you dont want to loose all your data in the worst case scenario do you. Do you backup? :)

Thanks,

Backup? Not frequently, but I have a few dvd's worth of my personal data. Looks like i'll have to backup more often.

My hard drive is a Samsung, sorry I misread what you were asking, and it is certainly SATA. My dvd drives appear to be IDE.

I'll download a diag tool now then and tell you how I fair :D.

Fair enough, as long as all is well thats the main thing.

If the error was due to the port that the hard disk is on i would suggest that you run the manufacturs diagnostic tool on it just to be sure. Sorry i i keep banging on about it but if the disk goes tits up you will loose everything, save games, music, pictures, the lot.
