I've faced the following problem: yesterday I started Norton Spyware scan
which then was checking computer for spyware for about five hours. During
that time I was typing documents so the the processor worked for full power.
After seven hours of such work the computer shut down unexpectedly though
everything was fine.
Today I have been sufing the internet (for about 10 minutes) and downloading
Norton Antivirus updates when suddenly my computer has shut down again. I've
started it and surfed the internet again and the same problem has occured.
Windows Update has stopped working though it is enabled.
I wonder is it a problem with windows or my computer. Could it be overheating?
Can anyone help me to resolve this problem?
Oh, I've forgot to mention I've got laptop computer Toshiba Satellite with
windows XP Home Edition (SP1). Intell pentium III processor 1,10 Ghz.

Thanks in advance!

My father recently had the same problem. The laptop had to be repaired:
mainboard defective and had to be replaced.

I think it has more to do with the computer than with Windows.

I would say it is possibly a heat problem, see:
http://www.pc-how-to.com/hardware/hotlaptop.htm.

But the fact you mention it shuts down whilst downloading Norton updates and
that Windows update has stopped working I would also check it out for
viruses.

If you can't get the machine to stay on long enough you may have to take the
hard disk out and plug it into another machine to test it.

If that is not an option then try either of:

The Ultimate boot CD: http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
or the Ultimate boot CD for Windows: http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Good luck,
Timekiller.
