Hi Guys!

I have a situation I've never seen before.

I have a client who has a win2k server. It has a ultra320 scsi boot (C:)
drive and an IDE drive (F:\...std ata). The system is installed on
c:\windows

ON this system, when you log on interactively it takes forever.

The strange thing is this: IF I take any action that requires explorer, it
runs incredibly slow UNTIL THE FIRST browsing of explorer window is open.

For example: if i double click on the my computer the first time it takes
like 60 seconds (there are no mapped drives) to display. After that it runs
fast.

If I right click on the start button and hit explore (only the first time
after logging on), it takes just as long as above. Each subsequent time is
fast.

But if i log off, and log back on (which takes forever to get an interactive
session up), and then double click on my computer...it still takes forever
to pop up.

At first I thought it was a disk issue. Now i'm not so sure. Mainly because
if it was a disk problem then why wouldn't it be slow for each access?

What are your thoughts? What tests might i do to track this down? I mean
really, at times interacting with this box is so aggravating because it
appears so slow the first time you log on. After a session is established,
it seems ok. not glorios but ok. But if you log off, log back on, it takes
forever to establish an interactive session. Even then, you can step away
from the computer for an hour. The first time you come back and double click
on my computer it still takes > 1 min to get the explorer window to open.
after that it seems fine. until you log off again.

I'm starting to think network. but i can't figure out a good way to test.
i'm losing my mind on figuring out what else to look into. ideas?

Name Resolution, Name resolution! What method of name resolution do You Use
for Your System?
When you log on the system needs to find a DC or other authority for the
network. Or when you go to Browse the machine has to turn those nice
friendly names into numbers and vise versa.
It needs a method to do so. Or else it resorts to Broadcasting and waiting
for the rest of the network to respond, thus your lag times till the network
resources have been audited.

So what method of Name Resolution do You Use? WINS, DNS, HOSTS, LMHOST or
????. Have you set a Browse Master for your system or do you just let the
machines duke it out for themselves?

That is where to start troubleshooting your problem.
