store pasword in Outlook 2003 with Win Vista

Hi,

I'm working at network with computers. Something with Win XP and anothers
with Win Vista. All with Outlook 2003.

When the users enter on Outlook 2003 and they want download the pop3 email,
they must type a password (of email server), but... although they mark the
box "store password" if they want to re-download the email five minutes
later (or more) they must re-type the password !!! This problem only is with
Windows Vista (not with the win XP users)

The password is not stored never at outlook! what can i do?

Go to Microsoft's huge support knowledgebase at
http://support.microsoft.com. Select your product (Outlook 2003).
Search on "remember password". Several possibilities show up. I
suspect you need to read the one that mentions "Protected Storage"
(which caches the encrypted password into the registry and has you
delete the key to force the password prompt again and then store the
password again). The article has you change permissions on a registry
key and then delete a subkey to get rid of the cached version of the
login credentials for the e-mail account.

I don't think that would be applicable, as the Protected Storage Subsystem
registry key doesn't exist in Vista.

KB290684. It was last updated on Nov 27, 2007 which is obviously
after the release of Vista. No mention as to under which version of
Windows this article applies. Only lists for which versions of
Outlook [Express] that it applies.

The HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider registry
key that it describes still exists in the VHDs that I get from
Microsoft's VHD catalog (to run under Virtual PC or VMware after
conversion). I doubt Microsoft is going through an upgrade process to
generate the Vista VHDs from some prior XP install (so it isn't that
old but no longer used registry keys got carried over in an upgrade
process).

PStore is deprecated, not omitted. We don't know if the user upgraded
to Vista and carried along the Pstore information which is now
read-only. Since OL2003 under pre-Vista used Pstore, maybe after an
OS upgrade it is still trying to use Pstore instead of the Data
Protection API (DPAPI). What triggers OL2003 to use Pstore under XP
but make it switch to DPAPI under Vista? OL2003 was released before
Vista. Did a later service pack add code to make Outlook 2003/2007
switch between the 2 methods based on OS version? What if that switch
didn't happen?

Since the registry key still exists but is now read-only under Vista,
just what harm would there be in following those instructions to
delete any old cached copy of the login password in a registry key
that supposedly is no longer used? It might not correct the actual
problem experienced by the OP but I'm not sure "doesn't apply" is
accurate.

I've seen people post that they tried it and it didn't work.

Okay, I'll have to remember that.

Regarding the tip at http://www.msoutlook.info/question/40, it seems
odds that "Roaming" is in the path name although the user might not be
logged into a domain (where roaming profiles apply).

No, it's not odd. Having the roaming folder is not the same as being in a
domain. Everybody has a roaming folder a Local and a LocalLow folder. It's
to separate that only if roaming folders is enabled in a domain that that
specific data will sync.
