I have installed a 160G external drive for video storage,
and formatted it NFTS. Main C boot drive remains FAT32.
XP crashed after about 1 week (and some messing about
with backups to the externaldrive) showing 'NTLDR is
missing'. Any suggestions?

Probably wrong newsgroup. The error message means the boot drive is not
working right. A couple of things might have happened:
1, your "main" drive works fine and your system changed its idea of what the
boot drive should be
2, your main drive is corrupt, you had some files deleted, or the file
\ntldr is not apparent for some similar reason

In either case, to stay somewhat on topic, your videos should be fine.
