Stopping WXP doing anything on CD/DVD/USBdrive insertion?
I have ticked all the options to stop music, mixed, video etc.etc but
Windows feels it just HAS to do something even if it is to start an
Explorer page.... I want to see nothing on the screen with any CD/DVD/USB
insertion until I tell it what I want to do, is there any way to
permanently stop these unwanted idiot messages hitting the screen?
I dont want to stop the hardware/storage initialising I just want it ready
when needed and not before!! Thanks to anyone that can provide a solution!
(Standard XPPro with SP3)

Either use TweakUI, or search the registry for all instances of
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and set them to FF hex.

Usual caveats about registry editing apply.

The latter is highly advisable in view of the increasing number of 'USB
pendrive viruses' in the wild.

Maybe you could try right click the drive and choose properties choose the
tab says autoplay tab then choose take no action for all the types content
type.

Thanks very much - I dont have TweakUI so I will give your regedit
suggestion a try (on a quick search there are 6 instances all set to 91h
(145). and just following on your message - the USB stick viruses you
talk about - are they exe files, exe file modifiers, or self installing
somehow?

Just as a note for this thread's future readers - this registry solution
worked a treat and was a cinch to do! My thanks to Anteaus!
