When I am editing in word (Office 2003) icons for insert, italics, etc keep
popping up. I have been unsuccessful in finding out how to stop them because
I must have been able to guess the right term for locating the desired info
in the various help venues. Can anyone out there help me, please?

What you describe does not sound anything like that happens normally in
Word. Perhaps you could describe better what you are doing and what exactly
happens?

As an example when I am typing address labels, a small icon - a duplicate of
the one on the program's tool bar will pop up on or very near what I just
typed. Icons popping up most frequently are those for paste, insert, bold,
etc. They are very distracting and I can't think of what useful purpose they
serve!

Tools > autocorrect options > smart tags > uncheck 'Show smart tag actions
buttons'
