Is there an option to prevent a Hotmail account from automatically checking
when Outlook is opened? I don't want to delete the account yet, but I'd
rather it not check each time, I'd prefer to do it manually.

Thanks.

On the account information for your Hotmail account, disable the ability to
automatically check mail for that account only. Since you didn't include
your Outlook version, I can't be any more specific, I'm afraid.

Sorry, I'm using Outlook 2003. But I don't see this option you are referring
to.

Click on your Tools menu and select Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click on
the Send/Receive button. On that screen, you will see all of your
Send/Receive settings. Click on the Edit button after selecting the
appropriate selection in the Group Name list at the top. After selecting
your Hotmail account, from there, it's pretty much self-explanatory.

Sorry, I don't think it's that self-explanatory. First off, I don't have a
Hotmail account listed in my Send/Receive settings (I removed it), so why
should it still check at startup? Second, even if I add it back, there is
still no option to prevent it from checking at startup. There are options to
include it in a send/receive, but that's not the same thing.

I have no idea. It shouldn't. Where is it getting the request to check for
mail if you've removed the account?

Yes, it is. The option to receive from that account in a Send/Receive is
where you tell Outlook when to check for mail automatically, which was your
original question.

I have no clue. But just to be clear, I haven't removed my Hotmail account
from Outlook, just from the Send/Receive list, but I'm sure you knew that.

It can't be the same thing, because I've got my other email address listed
in Send/Receive, and it isn't checked on startup, only Hotmail is. I don't
see an option anywhere that mentions "Send/receive on startup." The only
thing the Send/Receive list seems to be affecting is which accounts are
included when I do a send/receive manually. There is an option to do an
automatic s/r on exiting, but not startup.

There IS no "Send/Receive on startup". The ONLY way to get Outlook to check
ANY mail account at startup is to set a default polling interval ("Check for
new mail every ___ minutes." (Checking every 10-15 minutes should work
nicely.) Once you select the interval, Outlook will check the account(s) at
startup and then every ___ minutes after that.

As for your Hotmail account, if it is not in any Send/Receive group, it
cannot check for mail on its own.
