Recently whenever I open a word document it always opens in design view.
I can turn design view off in the document, but there must be a way to stop
word opening a document in design view.

It's opening in design view because you have (or at one time had) a control in
the document from the Control Toolbox, and you have the macro security level set
to High so that macros are disabled (Word considers those controls to be in the
same security class as macros).

Remove any Control Toolbox objects from your document. You may be able to use
items from the Forms toolbar instead, although that will require protecting the
document for forms (http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=22).

If the behavior continues after the control removal, or if there aren't any in
the document now, you can "clean" the document. Use the Save As dialog to save
the document in a Rich Text Format (RTF) file, then close it. Open the RTF file
and save that as a Word document (*.doc), which will remove any traces of the
controls.
