File doesn't open in the view that it was saved in

I started a new Word 2003 doc: File->New, click "Blank Document".

I pasted in text, turned on track changes, made changes, and inserted
comments.

I ensure the document was in /Print Layout view/

I turned on the Reviewing toolbar.

Clicked Show and ensured that "Insertions and Deletions" was checked.

Clicked Show->Balloons and ensured that "Only for Comments/Formatting"
was checked.

Then I saved the document.

BUT, whenever I open the saved document, it is in /Normal View/, and
of course, the balloons don't show.

Can the document be made to remember the view that it was in when it
was saved, and to open in this view?

to the View and Zoom only, however; settings on the Reviewing toolbar (and
even display of the Reviewing toolbar itself) will not be affected.

Thanks again for the helpful pointer.

At first, I was concerned that I had to change templates, which I've
always had poor luck doing (it's still a conceptual quagmire for me
right now). However, the article you referred to also mentioned a
"phantom change" to make in the document so that it actually saves.
Despite the fact that the "View" is apparently not saved with the
document, it seems to do so for me. Sometimes, behavioural departures
from formal description work out beneficially....

The issue is that Word saves a document only if it is "dirty," that is, if
you have made a change that is undoable (the Undo arrow is enabled).
Changing Options settings and many view settings don't register as changes,
so you have to force Word to save the document. You could use Shift+File |
Save All, but it's usually easier to make this "phantom edit" (Spacebar,
Backspace) to trick Word into thinking the document has changed.
