stop word from updating defined styles

In Word2003, how can you 'stop' word from creating new styles as you work on
a document? Open a 'new' doc in word2003 and the default paragraph mark is
'normal'....start typing (not applying styles here, just typing) and bold
something....all of a sudden, there is a new style in the list 'normal+bold'.
Type much of anything, indenting, italizing anything! and now you have a
gazillion new styles. Under Tools, AutoFormat as you type, I deselected
Define styles based on your formatting....but the list keeps growing....can
this feature be totally disabled???

These are not styles, just "formatting." On the Edit tab of Tools | Options,
clear the check box for "Keep track of formatting."

Suzanne - My Thanks....a question then - why does it show up in the styles
and formatting dropdown if it is not a 'style'?

Because the task pane is for "Styles and Formatting."
