Stop users changing styles

Hi

How can I stop users from modifying the styles I have created for
them, without restricting them from being able to use the Font menu in
the Home tab.

When I choose 'Limit formatting to permitted styles' it does stop them
changing the styles and restricts them to only using the styles I have
given them which is all good - but they still need to be able to apply
character styles etc. from the Font menu and this is greyed out.

"Character styles" are not applied from the Font menu. If you define
character styles and include them among the permitted ones, users will have
access to them. Character styles for italics (Emphasis) and bold (Strong)
already exist; if you need others, you'll need to create them.

I offered them this as an option - but they wanted the users to be
able to use the toolbar to apply the styles - did think about writing
a custom 'group' that mimicked the Fonts group, but couldn't get it to
work.

What is the easiest way to create a custom button that applies a
character style?

Tools | Customize in Word 2003 allows you to assign any style to a button.

this is Word 2007, so not sure the above applies.

If I use the Limit to Permitted Styles then not only the Fonts group,
but also the CTRL+B type keystrokes are restricted.

I can create character styles and reassign the default keystrokes to
them so CTRL+B will now apply the character style bold instead of
calling the function ApplyBold . However, I can't work out how to
have a menu group on the ribbon with the B button icon that will apply
the character style.

Word 2007 does seem to make many tasks more difficult. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable will be able to tell you how to do this.

I think the best you can do is make the custom character style into a Quick
Style; that way, it can be applied by clicking the appropriate button in the
Styles group on the Home tab.
