Stop Styles being created automatically

Everytime I make changes to some styled text word creates a new style.
“Define styles based on your formatting" is off
“automatically update" is off.
How do I stop word creating new styles on its own?

Hi Itierno,

In Tools=>Options=>Edit is 'Keep track of formatting' turned on?
That setting will show variants to your basic styles in the toolbar.
