Sure a workaround is to disable all scripting; right-click IE icon on desktop | Properties | Security | Custom level... | near the bottom | disable everything under scripting.

The fix is to find:

AdAware
HijackThis
BHODemon

Install and Run these. Find at www.google.com

Internet Explorer can stop pop-ups, if you disable Active Scripting, or set
IE to prompt you.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=308446&product=ie This site
also mentions third-party utilities. At home, I personally use the Google
toolbar to block pop-ups, see http://toolbar.google.com.

Also be aware that spyware can create pop ups while you surf. There are
several third-party utilities to scan your system for spyware, and your AV
vendor may provide one. At home, I personally use Ad-Aware personal to scan
for spyware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/.

Comrades,

Down with the Capitalists! Switch to the Mozilla browser. No pop-ups.
No dancing images. (Although you can have them if you want them). It's make
browsing a much more relaxing experiencing and will greatly cut down on the
number of downloaded parasites. A lot of nice features like tabbed browser
screens.
