logon screen is slow to come up

I have one computer that the logon on screen is slow to come up to log onto
windows 2000. The screen saver will kick in and when you go to wake the
system the computer starts to wake but the logon screen takes some time for
it to pop up. This has just started in the last few weeks.

I have defraged the hard drive, ran spyware programs the antivirus is up to
date. I can not find any information that will help eliminate this.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

You may have a background task which is causing problems which is
neither spyware, adware, or virus.

Check your background programs at this site and see if it helps :

This does not help because when I get to the point to check the task manager
I am already past the logon screen. It takes longer than usually for the
longon screen even to appear. Once the logon screen is up logging in takes
the usually time.

What is causing the logon screen to take so long to appear?

Get a copy of Perfomance Monitor (perfomon4.exe) from the Windows 2000
Resource kit and run it on a another computer on the network. Hit the '+'
button to add counters to the trace and select the slow computer from the
Computer dropdown. Then select Process from the Object dropdown and add CPU
time from some suspected processes to the chart. Then bring it out of screen
saver and monitor what happens.

FWIW I occasionally notice this on my system but chalk it up to things like
the Google Deskop search indexer and other "idle time" processes taking time
to get out of the way.
