Stop Error - fix doesn't work

I rec'd stop error 0x0000007B - inaccessible boot device.
The MS knowledge base gives a method of fixing the
situation that might work if I could get to step 1.

Step 1: Start your computer by using the Win2000 cd.
Step 2: At the Welcome to Setup screen press R.

The problem is that I get the stop error before I get to
the Welcome to Setup screen. The CD isn't even reading
when the error comes up. How can I get the computer booted
past the blue error screen so that I can try the fix?

Can anyone help?

Is your bios set up to allow booting from the CD drive? It would have
to be to do this fix.

If you then get the same error whether booting from the hd or the cd
drive, I would say that you have an ide/scsi problem (depending on
what you are using).

Try running chkdsk with the following switches /p /r and maybe it will repair it enough to get you to boot in. Hopefully it is a
corrupt file system. If not, first I would try a new IDE cable, then if no joy I'd take the drive and copy it, using a friend's
machine, or if opening the cover is not for you have someone copy whatever can be copied, get a new harddrive.
