Stop display x number unread messages showing on system startup?

I wish on system startup to stop the display - You have x unread email
messages, i.e. when the computer is turned on. This is not correct and it
has kept an incorrect setting when all have been read. How do I fix this
problem. I still want to receive genuine alerts for new messages coming in.
