before logon, it shows past email messages as still unread

After reading email (Outlook 2003), the next time I turn on my computer,
before logging on (XP Media Edition), it displays under my name that I have x
number of unread messages (also for my wife, who is a separate user). I have
tried deleting every single email from both our accounts, but the next time I
turn on the computer, the same unread message appears.
