stop defaulting to setup on bootup

S

Sam Lewis

Hi All

my friend somehow managed to install the windows xp setup files when
possibly attempting a repair installation. At any rate her machine now
prompts her to enter setup or manually choose windows xp when she boots her
machine. The trouble is it defaults to setup if she is not quick enough and
so needs to restart. Can the normal bootup sequence be re-established?

Thanks
Sam

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Sam,

You may need to edit the boot.ini file.

Open the Boot.ini file...
Start | Run | Paste this in the box

%homedrive%\boot.ini

Click OK.

Copy the contents without changing anything and paste that in a message.

And post back.

We'll tell you how to edit the boot.ini file.

If you are comfortable doing this yourself.

In the boot.ini
Under [operating systems],look for the line that refers to Windows XP Setup.
Under [operating systems], remove the line that refers to Windows XP Setup.

This is a sample of a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Professional
computer.

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Sorry for the delay in getting back.
Many thanks to both Wes and Carey. The boot.ini file was messed up and
changing it to the recommended content worked like a charm!
Now my friend thinks I'm a real computer wiz but I don't think I can fool
her for long, lol!
Thanks again,
Sam
