Stop C000021a {fatal system error } ....

D

DD

I have successfully installed SP3 on two computers running XP Home and
with such confidence I offered to install it for my granddaughter on her
XP computer. Unfortunately I got the error message "Stop: C000021a
{fatal system error} status of oxc 000012f (0x00000000 0x00000000)The
system has been closed down" on a blue screen, just after the Windows
splash screen. After this, the computer reboots and continues to do so
time and time again.
I have found several references to this problem on the Internet but
mostly without the blue screen or, some with the blue screen have been
able to boot into safe mode but it does not work for me!
From my reading, it would appear to be due to windows update 890859
which was installed just prior to installing SP3 but I cannot get into
the computer to delete this update...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestions, the reason the updates were so old was
because the computer has not been connected to the internet very often
and when it was, I don't think she would have known enough to download
and install the updates. The windows update yellow shield was in the
task tray when I first booted it up. I installed those that were already
on the computer and then went into windows updates to find if there were
any more, the only one on offer was SP3 which I downloaded and
installed. It asked me to restart the computer and that is where it all
started.
I tried to boot it up with my own Win XP disc but all I got was a
series of multicoloured lines so I guess I am going to have to ask for
the original disk? [fingers crossed]. I will post my progress.

Thanks again DD

I have tried the disc that came with the computer, an original Windows
disk and it will not even boot up from that, it does not come up with
the menu for installation etc. Any ideas?

It would help if you were to post a complete copy of the Stop Error
message.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Background information on Stop Error code:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797159.aspx

This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode
subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem
(CSRSS), is compromised. Security can no longer be guaranteed. Because
Win XP can't run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few
situations where the failure of a user-mode service can cause the system
to stop responding. This Stop message also can occur as a result of
malware infestation or when the computer is restarted after a system
administrator has modified permissions so that the SYSTEM account no
longer has adequate permissions to access system files and folders.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your interest! It is now a bit late for a 73 year old to
write a detailed description of the problem so I will post another
message in the morning [Sydney time]. I should point out that I have
tried the original windows CD in an effort to get some activity but the
CD is ignored, I am unable to get past the windows splash screen with
the Windows XP logo.
Thanks again for your interest...

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

Much the same for hotfixes:

To uninstall hotfixes from the Recovery Console navigate to the hotfix's
spuninst directory and use the BATCH command to process the uninstall
routine. Example:

cd %systemroot%\$NtUninstallKBnnnnnn$\spuninst

(or simply: cd $NtUninstallKBnnnnnn$\spuninst )

where KBnnnnnn is the number of the hotfix, example: KB123456$

then issue:

batch spuninst.txt

If you don't have a real XP CD you will need to use another method to
launch the Recovery Console:

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
Look for: How To Create a bootable CD to access the Recovery Console -
this 7Mb .iso will give you a bootable Recovery Console rather than
using the 6 floppy set above. Unzip and burn the .ISO file to disc.
