STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error)

Getting error on W2K machine: "STOP: c000021a (Fatal
System Error)
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated
unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x0000000
0x00000000). The system has been shut down"

Microsoft states to apply the latest patch (SP4) but this
doesn't resolve the issue. The site also states that a
fix is available from MS. Does anyone know how to fix
this other than formatting the pc?
