Stop c000021a {Fatal System Error} - Session Manager

Does anyone know the specifics of following Windows XP error?

The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly
with a status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000, 0x0000000) The system has been shut
down.

I got this on my laptop at the BSOD, and now it won't boot in any mode. Does
this indicate a HW or SW problem? I am inclined to believe that this is
driver related as it occurred after I updated my TrendMicro virus pattern
files, some of which changed the drivers in my System32 folder.

I would like to troubleshoot and restore my system without resorting to
wiping my drive. I only have the OEM disk and not Windows XP. But, I do have
a system restore disk which I got from another OEM when my desktop crashed.
Thanks.

Mark:

Thanks for the response. The link you gave for the registry repair recommend
not using that process for OEM installed Windowx XP systems, which mine is.
Here is what it says:

Warning: Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your
computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM
installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist
previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you
may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original
registry hives.

I don't know if this applies to me, since I plan on running the System
Restore from a CD-ROM (Received from an OEM for a previous desktop crash). I
looked in the KB but could not find an alternative method. Do you know of
another? Thanks.

How to troubleshoot a "STOP 0xC000021A" error
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/156669/en-us

Run the Check Disk on start up, make sure the system is up2dates from Ms
Windows updates site.
What software are installed on the system?.
Get another power supply and see if the problem is the unclean/consistent
current to the system or your motherboard is going Nuts!.
What make your Computer?.

I don't think that this is a power supply issue. This is a laptop and it
won't boot from either the wall adapter or battery.

I am not sure that some of these solutions will work for me. The computer
will not boot from Last Know Good or any of the other options. Unfortunately,
I just have a repair disk from the OEM, which will essentially wipe the
drive, which I don't want to do.

I don't think that I can run Dr. Watson without starting Windows. I am going
to have to use Recovery Console. However, the MS article for doing a registry
replacement using the files from the repair folder with Recovery Console
suggest that this method not be used on OEM installed version of XP, so I am
a bit stuck.

I have access to the drive through my desktop so, I don't know if I can just
copy a backup version of the registry that I have over the existing file.
