thanks for the help.

my MDT 40gig hard drive, with winxp pro on it, has
recently started making a lot of noise; buzzing, false
starts (during boot it will start to spin up, then stop,
that start to spin up again, several times). when it
does start up, the boot process and windows loading takes
forever, never getting to the desktop. then i get this
error;
stop: c0000218 {registry file failure} the registry
cannot load the hive (file): \system root\system32
\config\software or its log or alternate. it is corrupt,
absent, or not writable. beginning dump of physical
memory. dump of physical memory complete.

this mean my hard drive is toast? or do i have to
reinstall winxp pro?

thanks again,
Chris

Download a disk drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive
manufacturer's web site. This will create a boot floppy disc. Run the
diagnostics from there to see if the drive is failing.
