StoP c0000218(Registry file failure)

Hi! my machine won't boot and giving me this error; STOP: c0000218 ( Registry
file failureP) The registry can not load the hive(file): \Systemroot
\System32\config\Software or its log on alternative. It si corrupt, abasent,
or not writable. I tried everything to start even in safe mode and try to
boot from Window xp Cd but cant find the OS to repair. I don't want to format
the hard drive. Please help. thanks a lot.

If you can't get a last good config to load your kinda screw'd

Download and create a LiveCD http://www.knoppix.org/ to access your OS
or use XP cd repair feature and a dos (prompt) command window.

If you have back'd up your system files lately you will find a backup
of the reg in WINDOWS\repair - if you've never back'd up it will be a
back up of the first time you ever boot'd up,

Your registry is located WINDOWS\system32\config SOFTWARE hive has a
backup SOFTWARE.BAK there, while I've never been successful in
renaming it and getting it to work, you might get lucky.
ie: software to software.org and software.bak to software.
If your repair directory is recent - rename software to software.org
and copy the software hive over.
