Here is the complete error message.

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive
(file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

Is there an easy repair?

MS addresses the issue but I am unsure about a fix. As it is, I can no
longer restore XP from my HD.

Most likely you will need to boot to your XP CD to use

the Recovery Councel to fix the registry, and here is the

Thanks. I finally contacted HP and ordered the XP recover discs.
